Spencer Collection
The Spencer Collection was created and maintained by Robert Spencer, and since 1997 is part of the collection of the Royal Academy of Music. It is one of the most important collections for guitar and lute in the world, comprising instruments, rare manuscripts, books, artwork, and other items involving particularly the history and development of plucked instruments.
Fabricio Mattos has been regularly accessing the collection since 2017, and this intense research resulted in the Spencer Series, a set of lecture-recitals at the Royal Academy's Museum exploring in detail some of the material in the collection. Find below photo and video samples of the instruments in the collection (not all in an 'ideal' playing condition), and some images of the material explored by Fabricio Mattos in this series.
These are some of the instruments that belong to the Spencer Collection, in photos provided by the Royal Academy of Music.
In October 2020, Fabricio Mattos was invited by the AALGA - Asociación Argentina de Laúdes y Guitarras Antiguas to give a talk and record a mini-recital as part of their Ibero-American conference.

I. A Journey through Spaces & Places
In this first episode, concrete and abstract ideas on how music is expressed in the Brazilian culture will be explored, offering a glimpse into the diversity and colourfulness of the Brazilian musical landscape.
II. A Journey through Rhythm
In this second episode we explore the exciting musical landscape of Brazilian dances, using the guitar as a means of transportation. Fabricio Mattos takes us on a journey around Brazil through some of our most characteristic dance rhythms, from the carimbó to the milonga, from the frevo to the samba. The selected programme is performed in a single take, without pause, offering a unique opportunity to catch a glimpse of the vast mosaic that characterizes the Brazilian culture.
III. A Journey through Timbre
The last episode features traditional instruments and diverse ensembles from the Brazilian and European traditions. The programme converges on a musical piece that typically exemplifies the universal character of Brazilian music, which remains an ongoing source of inspiration for a new generation of musicians and composers in Brazil and abroad.
INFUSION is a transnational musical journey spanning three continents, curated and performed by Taiwanese flautist Yi-Hsuan Chen featuring as special guests Fabricio Mattos on the guitar and Joseph Havlat on the piano, and culminating in a world premiere by Brazilian composer Lucas Jordan. Recorded at the St. Pancras Clock Tower in London.
